About the Wisconsin Assembly of theChurch of GodThe Wisconsin Assembly of the Church of God is an association of churches in the State of Wisconsin that are affiliated with the Anderson, Indiana-based Church of God.
The Anderson, Indiana-based Church of God was started in 1881 By Daniel S. Warner and several co-founders. Their intent was to develop a movement that not only focused on living a holy life but strove for the unity of all God’s people. They pursued this by forsaking denominational hierarchies and formal creeds. Their intention was not to establish another denomination, but to move beyond denominational loyalties by striving for allegiance to Jesus Christ. By trusting solely in the Holy Spirit as their overseer, and the Bible as their statement of belief, the founders were at the forefront of a movement to restore unity and holiness to the church. To this day, the only thing required of someone to become a member of the Church of God is salvation.
The Church of God movement holds the firm conviction that the Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God. In this context we accept all that is central and enduring in the faith of historic, orthodox Christianity as these essentials often have been stated in widely accepted faith affirmations.
The Church of God movement believes in the principle of openness to all affirmations of the Christian faith which are expressions of the biblical revelation. The intended unity among Christians is not based on the achievement of full agreement on all theological questions. Rather, it is based on a common membership in the church through the grace of God and is anchored by a common commitment to the centrality of Christ and the authority of the Word of God.
The Anderson, Indiana-based Church of God movement is not connected to the various Church of God organizations of Tennessee and the Carolinas. Although we share their holiness commitment, we do not emphasize the charismatic gift of speaking in tongues generally associated with Pentecostal churches.
The Church of God is congregational in its government. But while each local congregation throughout the State is autonomous, together the local congregations form an association of like-minded churches that work together in a mutual goal of spreading the gospel throughout the State of Wisconsin. Additionally, the congregations of the Wisconsin Assembly worship and fellowship together through a variety of activities. Similarly, the various state assemblies throughout our nation combine to form the General Assembly.
